Dr. Gustavo Saposnik, MD, MSc, FAHA, FRCPC

Dr. Gustavo Saposnik is an Associate Professor of Medicine (Neurology) at the University of Toronto, Canada. He is a staff Neurologist at St. Michael’s Hospital and Director of the Stroke Outcomes Research Center at the Li Ka Shing Knowledge Institute. Dr. Saposnik holds a cross appointments at the Institute of Clinical Evaluative Sciences (ICES), and at Institute of Health Policy, Management and Evaluation. Dr. Saposnik was the recipient of the 2012 Distinguished Clinician Scientist Award and the Mac Donald Award from HSFC. The primary focus of Dr. Saposnik’ research is Stroke Outcomes Research, including 3 levels of intervention: 1) acute stroke care; 2) stroke prevention; and, 3) stroke rehabilitation. Dr. Saposnik is the principal investigator of several research projects and grants, published over 90 peer-reviewed articles.

Dr. Saposnik has established a successful research program on Stroke Outcomes Research (www.sorcan.ca), which acquired peer-reviewed funding, publications in high-impact journals, collaborations with expert colleagues, and received national and international recognition. He is currently working with the American Heart Association in developing guidelines for stroke management. The impact of Dr. Saposnik’s research has transpired in recent reviews on ‘Advances in Health Policy and Outcomes’ (Rudd et al. Stroke 2009; 40;e301-e304 and Williams et al. Stroke 2010;41: e77-e80), and LANCET (Lancet 2011; 377: May 14).

Dr. Daniel Selchen, MD, FRCPC

Dr. Daniel Selchen completed his medical studies at the University of Manitoba and his Neurology training at the University of Toronto. Currently, he is the Head of the Division of Neurology at St. Michael’s Hospital and the Medical Director of the Regional Stroke Program for St. Michael’s Hospital and the South East Toronto Stroke Network.

Prior to joining St. Michael’s, Dr. Selchen was the Medical Director for neurology, neurosurgery & musculoskeletal programs at Trillium Health Science Centre in addition to being the Medical Director for the West GTA Regional Stroke Network. His academic and research interests are in stroke and also multiple sclerosis.
